Marco Rossi’s #hungary side came from two goals down to extend their unbeaten record in #uefa European Championship qualifying to an impressive six matches, with what was just their second-ever competitive fixture away to Lithuania.

While the makeup of Group G heading into the fixture meant Hungary were all but confirmed a spot in next summer’s European Championships, the Magyars were still left stunned at the break, with Lithuania having raced to a two-goal lead. It started with a sensational solo effort from Fedor #Černych, whose dazzling run ended with the forward curling a delightful right-footed effort into the bottom corner from outside Hungary’s penalty box. Already in shock to have taken the lead, the nation ranked 143rd made it two midway through the half – this time Pijus #Širvys popped up at the back post with a stylish header.

It was an uncharacteristic showing from Hungary in the first period, but Rossi will likely have been encouraged to have seen his side regain control in the second period, putting the Lithuania defence under pressure. The visitors reduced the arrears 20 minutes after the restart, with #Liverpool star Dominik #szoboszlai sending a confident strike into the roof of the net from the penalty spot. That was before Barnabás Varga restored parity for the qualification-chasers 10 minutes from time, with the 28-year-old striker rising highest inside the penalty area to head home Szoboszlai’s corner kick.

Granted, #lithuania ended up with more than most people expected them to achieve against Hungary, as the result marked just the second time they’d avoided defeat against the Magyars in a competitive fixture. However, results elsewhere mean Rinktine’s wait to qualify for their first-ever major tournament goes on, as Lithuania’s chances of making it to Euro 2024 have now officially vanished. The same, of course, cannot be said for Hungary, who barring a total collapse in the final international break of the year, will line up next summer for their third consecutive European Championships.
