Qualification for Euro 2020 began on Thursday
England recovered from an early scare in Montenegro as Ross Barkley scored twice in a clinical 5-1 victory to continue their strong start to the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.
Marko Vesovic raised the decibel level in the stadium when he fired the hosts in front against the run of play in the 17th minute, but England were unfazed and went ahead by halftime thanks to goals by Michael Keane and Barkley.
Montenegro were still a threat early in the second half and Fatos Beciraj could have equalised, but when Barkley drilled in his second just before the hour the result was a formality.
Skipper Harry Kane tapped home the fourth goal from Raheem Sterling’s cut back after a swift counter-attack and Sterling slid home in the 81st minute to complete the rout.
Unfortunately, the game was marred by alleged racist chanting by Montenegro fans towards Danny Rose, who reacted angrily towards the end of the game as tempers flared.

Ronaldo injury
Juventus face a nervous wait over the extent over Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness as the Portugal captain suffered a hamstring injury against Serbia.
Ronaldo was forced off after just half an hour after pulling up injured in Serbia’s half.
The 31-year-old received treatment near the corner flag but could not continue, and appeared to have tweaked his hamstring.
Ronaldo’s injury will come as an unwelcome setback to Juventus, who face Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on April 10.
Juve head to Amsterdam for the first leg, before taking on the Dutch giants in Turin on April 16.
The Bianconeri needed every ounce of Ronaldo’s brilliance in the last round, as his stunning hat-trick capped a remarkable comeback win over Atletico Madrid.
Ronaldo’s potential absence will be a huge boost to Ajax, who have already proved their credentials in the Champions League by knocking out holders Real Madrid.
Bad news for Portugal – and potentially for Juventus – as Cristiano Ronaldo has gone off injured. More on that as and when we get it…
