The Netherlands’ qualifying struggles continued in midweek when they were hammered 4-0 by the favourites to top Group A, France. This Sunday the Dutch play host to Bulgaria at the Amsterdam ArenA, but they find themselves sitting below their guests after Bulgaria moved into 3rd place following a surprise 3-2 win over Sweden.
The hosts were enjoying a three game winning streak until their dismal display in Paris, while recovering from the disappointment of losing in Belarus with victory over an in form Sweden. That result means that Bulgaria are now just a point behind the Scandinavians, and two ahead of their hosts this weekend, which makes a draw a decent result on Sunday.
Following their failure to qualify for the 2016 European Championships, there was a mass upheaval with the Dutch setup, with a selection of the older players retiring and a batch of new and young players drafted in. While the short term effects of such a turnover was bound to produce negative results, the hope is that eventually, the Netherlands will be blessed with a new, talented generation of players, that have been playing alongside and learning from the likes of Robben, Van Persie and Sneijder. The only problem with this is the patients of the Dutch FA and the supporters, especially when you see performances and results like Thursday nights 4-0 defeat against France.
There is no doubt that the Netherlands are a footballing nation in the early stages of a rebuilding project and their hit and miss results are a perfect example of this, beating the likes of Luxembourg with ease, but struggling against nations like Bulgaria, who themselves are not blessed with world class players.
